Supply chain needs more than an EOL notice

When a component goes NRND or EOL, the notice is the beginning of the work, not the answer. Before anyone can commit to a last-time buy, an alternate, or a redesign, someone has to answer:

The notice answers almost none of these. Today the answers live in BOM spreadsheets, distributor tabs, engineering's heads, and old email threads — assembled by hand, per part, under deadline. PCNshark keeps them on one component record.

Spec similarity is a prioritization signal, not qualification. Engineering owns alternate evaluation and qualification — PCNshark does not approve substitutions or certify a replacement as drop-in compatible. It keeps the evaluation, its evidence, and its sourcing context visible to everyone involved. Alternate recommendations are available on Team plans and above.

Coordinate the response: LTB, alternate, or redesign

There is rarely one right answer, and the same notice can end differently per product. PCNshark does not choose a response — it centralizes the exposure, deadlines, sourcing context, evaluation status, and ownership so the team can choose deliberately and record why.

Buy from existing inventory

If on-hand and on-order stock covers remaining demand, record that conclusion — and the coverage assumption behind it — so the next person doesn't re-derive it.

Execute a last-time buy

The LTB deadline stays tracked against the open impact. Demand forecasting and the purchase itself happen in your own tools; PCNshark keeps the date, owner, and recorded decision connected to the part.

Qualify an alternate

Engineering evaluates the manufacturer's recommended replacement or a spec-ranked candidate; sourcing sees the conditions each one can be bought under. Qualification and approval remain with engineering.

Redesign the assembly

When no acceptable alternate exists, the exposure summary shows exactly which programs and BOMs carry the redesign — and the decision history shows why the other paths were ruled out.

Accept the change

Many PCNs alter a process, material, or site without form-fit-function impact. Acceptance is still a decision — reviewed, owned, and recorded rather than assumed.

Choose another path

Request clarification from the manufacturer, shift demand to another design, or close with no active exposure. Whatever the team decides, the record holds the what, who, and why.

No. PCNshark refreshes distributor data on demand — when someone on your team asks — across roughly 15 distributors. Stock, MOQ, price breaks, and lead times are estimates and decision context, not live feeds and not quotes. Availability and prices change; confirm terms with the distributor when you order.
02Which sourcing details does PCNshark show?

03How does PCNshark treat independent-market offers?
They are shown and clearly separated from authorized-channel availability, so the team can weigh them deliberately — including whatever inspection or escrow practices your organization requires. PCNshark does not vouch for independent inventory.
04Can PCNshark place an order or execute a last-time buy?
No. PCNshark is not a marketplace or procurement suite. It tracks the LTB deadline, the owner, and the recorded decision; forecasting the buy quantity and placing the order happen in your own procurement process.
05Does PCNshark guarantee availability or lead time?
No. Lead times and availability are estimates drawn from distributor data at the moment of refresh. They are there to inform the LTB-versus-alternate-versus-redesign discussion, not to promise supply.
06How do alternate recommendations work?
Two ways, kept distinct. The manufacturer-recommended replacement is extracted from the notice itself; functional candidates are ranked by specification similarity, with the match percentage and the specs that differ shown. Neither is an approval — engineering reviews and qualifies. Alternate recommendations are available on Team plans and above.
07Can supply chain approve a substitute part in PCNshark?
No — qualification and approval of substitutes stay with engineering. Supply chain contributes the sourcing context (availability, cost, lead time, channel) and owns commercial actions like the last-time buy. PCNshark records who decided what, so the split of responsibility is visible rather than assumed.
08How does PCNshark know which programs are exposed?
You upload your BOMs (.csv, .tsv, .txt, .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm). PCNshark matches affected MPNs from notices against those BOM lines and surfaces the affected assemblies and programs, with per-line impact decisions and exclusions.
09Does PCNshark find EOL and PCN notices automatically?
No. PCNshark works from the notices your team forwards or uploads — it does not crawl manufacturer or distributor portals on your behalf. Keep your manufacturer and distributor subscriptions; PCNshark handles everything after a notice lands.
10What if new information conflicts with a decision we already made?
Reviewed lifecycle decisions are never silently overwritten. When later evidence conflicts with a manually reviewed status, PCNshark flags the conflict for review — a person resolves it, and the resolution lands in the part's decision history.
11Can we see who decided what, and when?
Yes. Every component carries a part-level decision history: who made the change, when, the old and new status, the rationale, and the source. When a part resurfaces two years later, the reasoning is still attached to it.
12Does PCNshark integrate with our ERP or procurement suite?
There is no native integration. Handoffs are manual and file-based: a BOM-impact CSV and a PDF impact report you can attach to your own change or purchasing process. Your ERP and procurement tools remain the systems of record for orders and inventory.
13What happens after the 14-day trial?
Starter and Team include a 14-day trial and require a payment method. After the trial, the plan continues unless you cancel. Scale begins as a paid subscription rather than a trial.
