PCN management is not one product category. Depending on the team, it means a shared inbox, an alert subscription, a component database seat, or a dedicated workflow tool, and most companies end up combining several.

The manual process: email and spreadsheets

The default everywhere: notices arrive by email, someone saves the PDF, copies the affected part numbers into a spreadsheet, and checks them against BOM exports by hand. Ownership is handled in meetings and chat.

Its strengths are real. It costs nothing, requires no procurement, and everyone already knows the tools. At low notice volume with one or two stable BOMs, it is genuinely fine. It strains when a notice carries hundreds or thousands of affected part numbers, when several BOMs and revisions are active, or when a deadline depends on someone remembering a spreadsheet row. If you run this way, a written process with one intake inbox and a deadline log removes most of the avoidable risk.

Manufacturer and distributor alert subscriptions

Most manufacturers and large distributors offer change-notification subscriptions: register interest in parts and get notified when a PCN or discontinuance is published. Many manufacturers require an account to subscribe; distributors often let you follow the parts you buy.

These solve discovery, and they are worth keeping no matter what else you use. What they cannot do is know your BOMs. An alert tells you a notice exists; deciding whether it affects anything you build, who owns the response, and what to do before the deadline is still your team's work.

Component intelligence platforms: SiliconExpert and Z2Data

Some teams run a dedicated layer for that loop alongside the platform.

Octopart: search and sourcing, adjacent to PCNs

Octopart is a component search engine: availability, pricing, datasheets, and lifecycle information across distributors. Engineers use it while selecting parts, buyers use it while sourcing, and its own resources point users toward manufacturer channels for change notifications.

It sits adjacent to PCN management rather than inside it. Octopart helps you find and evaluate parts, including when you need an alternate for a discontinued one; it is not built to process incoming notices against your BOMs.

PCNshark: the notice-to-BOM-action workflow layer
